I loved this short. It was fabulous. View 1 comment. Apr 24, Lexie rated it really liked it Shelves: magical-realism , short-stories. I want to start by proclaiming my love for Axolotls.

Look at this little guy with his little face. I've got to be honest, though. After reading this short story, I'm a little scared of them. Just don't stare at one too long, and everything will be fine. This was a strange little story, but unexpectedly haunting. I have a feeling it will stay with me for a while. Dec 10, Glire rated it liked it Shelves: latinoamerica , short-stories , argentina. Nov 13, Huda rated it liked it. Found this short story after gaining an unhealthy obsession with axolotls.

The irony. This read like the slow waters of the bottom of the tank, home to the axolotls in a confined, fluid manner. Especially loved the ending. View 2 comments.

I just looked up what an axolotl looks like and now I understand. Sep 15, Jessica rated it really liked it Shelves: from-dhs , short-stories.

It was this short story that inspired me to write a research paper on the axolotl for my endangered species requirement. They are fascinating creatures and more of an effort should be made to preserve their natural habitats!

Jun 25, Alberto Loredo rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites. Feb 25, Emily rated it liked it Shelves: adult. A great creepy short story. I remembered reading this in High School, but thought it was a poem and I couldn't remember enough details to find it.

This story haunted me for years, until someone finally sleuthed it out for me. Aug 01, Piedra Libro rated it it was amazing. Cada vez que lo leo me parece excelente la forma en que uno mismo cambia para siempre.

Y amo a los axolotes. Sep 12, Camila rated it it was amazing Shelves: buenas-lecturas. Jan 02, Antonella Requena Ciccoloni rated it liked it Shelves: cuentos.

May 23, Kevin Mora rated it liked it.

But I did read it and made a presentation on it, so, I think it's fair game. I came back to Axolotl for my presentation because, from what I remembered from the first time reading it, I thought it was an amazing horror story. However, I read it from a postcolonial approach, which gave so SO much more to unpack from those 7 or less pages. One of my favourite aspects is the sense of doom, of i Am I cheating for posting such a short story?

One of my favourite aspects is the sense of doom, of inevitability that keeps drawing the narrator to the axolotls, and eventually makes him mad.

Why is the narrator obsessed with them and how does he finally turn into one? There are multiple responses to these questions, along with each individual interpretation based on internal explorations of the text. However, these interpretations are, academically and analytically, worth very little if they do not include external explorations as well. Therefore, to answer such questions specifically, readers must look to historical and cultural context. The Jardin des Plantes is located near the Sorbonne in one of the oldest and most appealing neighborhoods of Paris, just along the Left Bank of the Seine. It is also subtlely unnerving in its combination of realistic and fantastic elements, especially as the joining of the two is virtually seamless. Scarcely 2, words in length, the story "Axolotl" collected in Final de juego is representative of magical realism, a South American style of fiction that introduces patently preposterous subjects and events in an offhand manner and then explores their natures in a closely detailed way. The title itself would be meaningful only to a marine biologist, and so the story's narrator takes time to look up the name in a library: "axolotls are the larval stage provided with gills of a species of salamander of the genus Ambystoma.
