BS EN specifies the properties of aggregates and filler aggregates obtained by processing natural, manufactured or recycled materials and mixtures of these aggregates for use in concrete in conformity with BS EN and concrete used in roads and other pavements and for use in precast concrete products.
It incorporates a general requirement that aggregates shall not release any dangerous substances in excess of the maximum permitted levels specified in a relevant European Standard for the material or permitted in the national regulations of the member state of destination.
Physical requirements - General - Resistance to fragmentation - Resistance to wear - Particle density and water absorption - Particle density - Water absorption - Bulk density - Resistance to polishing for application in surface courses - Resistance to surface abrasion - Resistance to abrasion from studded tyres for application in surface courses. Chemical requirements - General - Petrographic description - Classification of the constituents of coarse recycled aggregates - Sulfur containing compounds - Acid-soluble sulfate - Total sulfur - Water soluble sulfate content of recycled aggregates - Chlorides - Carbonate content for concrete pavement surface courses of fine, and all-in aggregates - Other constituents - Constituents which alter the rate of setting and hardening of concrete - Constituents which affect the volume stability of air-cooled blast furnace slag.
Durability - General - Magnesium sulfate soundness of coarse aggregates - Freeze — thaw resistance - Water absorption as a screening test for freeze-thaw resistance - Resistance to freezing and thawing - Resistance to freezing and thawing in the presence of salt extreme conditions - Volume stability - drying shrinkage - Alkali-silica reactivity. Designation - Designation and description - Additional information for the description of an aggregate.
