He was Emeritus of Roman Law of the Atheanaeum of Sicilian capital, where he was teaching as the illustrious continuator of the Palermitan Romanist school, from to with the interval of one academic course at La Sapienza. Matteo Marrone has died at the age of 90 in a compulsory silent funeral due to the exceptional circumstances we are experiencing, but also leaving a deep mark for having been, as he came to be described, the greatest living heir to the formidable romanistic tradition palermitana. Predictably, the rest of the scheduled conferences will either be uploaded to the Institute's website, or previously announced to be followed through videoconference. Roman Law: An Introduction offers a clear and accessible introduction to Roman law for students of any legal tradition. Roman law remains at the heart of the civil law tradition of Europe and much of the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Roman lawyers created new legal concepts, ideas, rules, and mechanisms that most Western legal systems still apply. The study of Roman law thus facilitates understanding among people of different cultures by inspiring a kind of legal common sense and breadth of knowledge.

Expertly written by a leading scholar, the author offers a rare combination of profundity of ideas and simplicity of expression. It is a ringing defense of the theistic conception of secular legal systems and an uncompromising attack on the agnostic and atheist conception. View on cambridge. The New Global Law more. A new global law will constitute, by itself, a genuine legal order and will not be limited to a handful of moral principles that attempt to guide the conduct of the world's peoples.
If the law of nations served the hegemonic interests of ancient Rome and international law served those of the European nation-state, then a new global law will contribute to the common good of all humanity and, ideally, to the development of durable world peace.
This volume offers a historical—juridical foundation for the development of this new global law. This volume explores a millennium-long story of law and religion in Italy through a series of 26 biographical chapters. The chapters range from the first Italian civilians and canonists, Irnerius and Gratian in the early twelfth century, to the leading architect of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Paul VI.
Between these two book ends, this volume offers notable case studies of familiar civilians like Bartolo, Baldo, and Gentili and familiar canonists like Hostiensis, Panormitanus, and Gasparri but also a number of other jurists in the broadest sense who deserve much more attention especially outside of Italy. All chapters have been written by distinguished legal scholars and historians from Italy and around the world. This diversity of international and methodological perspectives gives the volume its unique character; it will appeal to scholars, lawyers, and students interested in the interplay between religion and law in the era of globalization.
Christianity and Global Law more. This volume explores the interaction between Christianity and the challenges and principles of global law. This volume presents freshly commissioned chapters by two dozen leading jurists, theologians, philosophers, political scientists, historians, and social scientists from North America, Europe, South Africa, and Australia.
The chapters reflect the provisional, experimental, and sometimes controversial discourse about global law today. Great Christian Jurists in French History more. The volume is part of a larger project on Christian jurists in world history led by John Witte, Jr. The first two volumes, on English and Spanish Christian jurists, have already been published. This volume on French Christian jurists is thus the third in a series projected to include at least seven more. Like the other volumes in the collection, this one is biographical, juridical, ecumenical, and global in character.
The biographical dimension emphasizes not only the great legal contributions of each jurist but also his or her links to Christianity. The juridical dimension highlights the impact of each jurist on public and private law and justice, whether from inside the legal profession or from a broader philosophical, theological, or intellectual tradition.
The ecumenical dimension shows Christianity as a unity, taking into consideration the way different churches and denominations are part of a whole. Finally, the global dimension emphasizes that each volume in this series on great Christian jurists illustrates the distinctive contributions of different nations to the global conversation about law and Christianity.
This volume on French Christian jurists examines the lives of twenty-seven key legal thinkers in French history, particularly the ways their Christian faith and ideals were a factor in framing the evolution of law and justice. All chapters have been written by distinguished legal scholars and historians, mainly from France but also from Belgium, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The collaboration among French and non-French scholars, and the diversity of international and methodological perspectives, gives the volume its unique character and value.
