Many composers of jazz standards draw their influences from a variety of sources. Sometimes you as a listener can hear how the creative artist has incorporated familiar musical material into a piece. At other times, you will only uncover a more subtle point of departure for a song in the process of learning to play it on the piano. In either case, pianists and composers need to study a variety of music if they are ever going to develop their musical potential.
Many piano students learn how to play certain pieces by Chopin as part of their musical training. Among them is the Prelude Opus 28 No. This short composition 25 measures is familiar to most people who have taken piano lessons or who have had a sibling who took lessons. As a result, it comes as no surprise that composer Antonio Carlos Jobim was strongly influenced by this popular Chopin Prelude when he composed How Insensitive in In order to help you see certain similarities between the two pieces, I have included a couple of musical examples with this post.
Although my recorded performance is played in the key of D minor one flat , I transposed the written excerpt of How Insensitive to E minor one sharp so that you could more easily compare these two compositions, which were written years apart. In terms of the overall melodic line, both pieces start on the 5 th note of the E minor scale B: the dominant and slowly descend to the 1 st note of the E minor scale E: the tonic.
This five note drop takes almost the entire length of each piece. How is it possible for a composition to be 32 measures long and only cover a five note range? Example No. Both composers emphasize the notes of the scale in this section B and A by making them longer as well as including them more often. Chopin does manage, however, to challenge the aspiring piano student by incorporating a couple of cadenza-like melodic lines.
You can see in Example No. Hopefully, you can see that great music transcends trends, nationality and style. Here we have American jazz musicians performing a song by a Brazilian composer who was influenced by the classical music of the Polish composer Frederic Chopin.
Need I say more? Music is truly the international language. Are you beginning to wonder how you can recognize musical influences in your piano pieces? Would you like to find ways to develop and express your own musical voice? Have you always wanted to put two seemingly different pieces of music together in an arrangement?
